The ‘Cult Classic’ Hot Chocolate

For all the chocolate lovers who appreciate a timeless favourite, The Cult Classic hot chocolate is the perfect homemade recipe. Smooth, creamy, and comforting, this simple yet rich hot chocolate is the kind everyone remembers from childhood. Ideal for cosy nights in, a quick pick-me-up, or sharing with family and friends, this easy hot chocolate recipe delivers all the flavour you crave without any fuss. If you’re searching for a no-fail, classic hot chocolate recipe that warms the heart and satisfies every sweet tooth, this one is sure to become your go-to.

When we set up a little photoshoot to launch our new Home mug design, I couldn’t resist stocking the pantry with every kind of chocolatey treat and topping I could get my hands on. Of course, the real fun wasn’t just in taking the photos… it was in taste-testing along the way (a role I took very seriously and enjoyed thoroughly!). There’s just something about wrapping your hands around a big handmade mug of hot chocolate that feels comforting and a little bit luxurious, and that’s exactly what our mugs are made for -those cosy, joy-filled sips.

What You Need

Ingredients & Equipment

  • Instant Chocolate Drinking Powder (your choice)

  • Milk (full cream, skim, oat… you decide, but be sure to check it froths well!)

  • Chocolate stick/dipper (your choice, we couldn’t resist a KitKat!)

  • *OPTIONAL: Add a shot of espresso to turn your hot chocolate into a Mocha Cult Classic!

  • Laura Luke Handmade Companion Mug

  • Tablespoon

  • Kettle (or an alternative way to boil water)

  • Espresso Machine with Steel Pitcher (alternatively, you could use a microwavable jug and milk frothing wand.)

How to Make ‘The Cult Classic’ Hot Chocolate

  1. Place one heaped dessert spoon (or tablespoon) of instant chocolate drinking powder into your companion mug. Add a small amount of boiling water to mix it into a paste.

  2. Pour a generous serving of milk into a steel pitcher. Using an espresso machine, position the pitcher under the steam wand to froth the milk until the pitcher is hot to the touch. Tap the pitcher firmly on the countertop to burst any larger bubbles and gently swirl the milk around.

Alternatively, you can warm your milk on a stovetop or in a microwave and use a handheld milk frother.

  3. Using your spoon, pour the frothed milk over the chocolatey paste into your companion mug and give it a quick stir to combine the milk and chocolate paste, leaving at least 2 centimetres of space from the top rim of your mug. Spoon any remaining milk foam on the top.

  4. Sprinkle a little chocolate powder on top

  5. Whilst hot, use your chocolate stick/dipper (we recommend a KitKat) to stir and enjoy the melting chocolatey goodness!
